News HLD plans 118 tonne new bridge lift for WestConnex

HLD was recently engaged by Joyce Krane to develop a series of lift planning studies for the construction of a new 70-metre bridge over Alexandria Canal in Sydney.

The new Campbell Road Bridge is part of the major WestConnex transport project currently under construction. As part of the project, Campbell Road is being extended eastwards across the canal to Bourke Road, Alexandria, easing congestion in the area.

A separate pedestrian and cycle bridge will also be provided along the southern side of the Campbell Road bridge as part of a broader series of works to improve pedestrian and cyclist accessibility around Sydney Park

Using a Liebherr LG1750 truck-mounted lattice jib crane, HLD proposed unloading bridge beam segments each weighing up to 40 tonnes in a constricted site.

Once the bridge beams were assembled, the new bridge weighing 118 tonnes was slewed across a 54 metre radius into its final place.

The highly technical project required weeks of planning, engagement with statutory authorities and many of the precast beams being installed overnight.
