Currently under construction by Lendlease, NorthConnex will become the longest road tunnel in Australia when it is completed in 2019.
At nine-kilometres long the tunnel, being developed by Transurban, will link the M1 Pacific Highway at Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills. It will remove 5,000 trucks off Pennant Hills Road each day, cut travel times by 15 minutes and avoid 40 lights on the Pacific Highway between the Sydney CBD and the start of the M1.
As part of Lendlease’s Global Minimum Requirements, an independent engineer must verify all lifts greater than 20 tonnes, using two or more cranes on a lift or those that have a complex rigging arrangement on its construction sites around the world. HLD has been engaged by Lendlease as its preferred supplier of all third-party lift verifications on NorthConnex.
Blake Hammon, Managing Director of HLD said the company has worked on some particularly spectacular lifts over the past 4 months.
“We’ve verified the lifts and drops of all sorts of machinery, in and out of 90-metre-deep holes into the tunnel’s entry,” Mr Hammon said.
“We’ve seen everything from 20-tonne piling rigs and Franna cranes to road headers, diggers, bulldozers and pre-cast concrete panels lifted in and out of the tunnel’s tight entry confines,”
“We’ve even verified the drops of 95-tonne tunnel-boring machines. It’s a phenomenal site to watch!”
Lendlease uses 100 tonne Eilbeck gantry cranes across five major tunnel entries on the project as well as the M2 integration site at North Rocks.
